east West

To kick off last weekend’s Refinery 29 East West Tag sale, a fine group of people got together at the Urban Outfitters / Space 15 Twenty pop-up in Hollywood for a night of shopping discounted designer goods, eating Umami Burger treats and listening to live music from the Like.  And as they do best, R29 brought out a fashionable crowd.

photo creds + see more shots from the evening here.

The night was hot, so I kept it comfy w vintage silk trousers, a Joie silk tank, Jeffrey Campbell heels and a vintage Etienne Aigner mini bucket purse I picked up from VintiqueLA.

Pre-party I assembled a gift bag of mod LA Vintage Exchange wares for the stylish ladies of the Like and was excited to see drummer Tennessee Thomas emerge from backstage wearing a nautical anchor bandana I had included in the package.  In fact, I was so excited I grabbed her for a few snapshots!  An unlikely move on my part.  Thx to Suzy of Rossmore LA for her camera and pro-photo skills.

vintageful Yard sale

Drop by on Saturday for some DEALS. This is my first big clearance sale so expect tons to shop- most under $10!

now, And later

Scents.
now: The Jonathon Adler-like packaging grabbed me, but the fresh, crisp scent of MOR Nordica perfume in DALA sold me. I love this smell- my only wish is that the bottle was bigger.

later: Anytime I pass by a FRESH store I stop to drench myself in the clean & natural scent of Cannabis Santal. I noticed especially with this scent wearing it on the skin vs. smelling made a big different. This bottle will definitely be my next try.

Jewelry
now: My newest Rossmore LA addition, the Four Square necklace in oxidized silver (below a gold & silver version). I picked this little # up from designer and lovely friend Suzy Lequeux at Coachella this year.

later: You can never have too much Rossmore, so next up on my list, the Say Anything necklace will be the perfect addition to my layered look.
Shoes
now: It’s back to sandal weather in LA, so I picked up a pair of the ecote Sunburt Sandals at Urban in need of an affordable, COMFY flat to wear day & night. I love the white w gold beading, substantial, but not too much. And for $38 they’re a great deal.

later: The Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony CO2 Buckle boots / shoes / sandals kick ASS. During a recent NYC trip my friend Danielle modeled them for me at the OC location in the Ace Hotel and confirmed this style is a must. The casual + dressy shoe can replace pretty much everything in your current line-up. This particular pair are stunning, and way out of my budget

back

I’ve been completely MIA, but am back, w upgrades.

My website www.LAVintageExchange.com is now live and very pretty w much help from the wonderful Vanessa of DUK Design. The main image is of my grandmother Laura who had impeccable style and pose. I also moved homes, work studios and blogs. The new place is fantastic and I have a work studio in back- so my commute has become extra eco-friendly. All three spaces are in mid-design process… The new work studio pre-painting – a huge, hot mess.

I picked this as an accent color among the dark walls – it ended up looking more yellow than plannedPost wall, floor & ceiling painting – next step – merchandising the space!

And just for the month of April check out LA Vintage Exchange goods at the AK1511 pop-up shop on Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach. Me + 15 other awesome brands are featured this month, giving shoppers a nice taste of contemporary + vintage clothing, jewelry, accessories and home goods.Selection of LA Vintage Exchange hand-dyed blazers, cardigans & tops.

chuck Taylors

i just completed this for a company in London.  I got to talk about style, and model some Converse- not too painful. :)

How would you describe your style?
 Comfy, casual, cool.
My go-to outfit at the moment is a black Alexander Wang T dress, consignment lame leggings, and vintage 9west lace-up field boots. I also love jewelry; my favorite is a full-finger armor ring I scored on Ebay. I rarely buy new- I stick to vintage and re-sale shops- much more selection, plus you’re making the eco-friendly choice.

How do you think your style has changed in the last year?
Less trend, more classics. I’ve down-sized my wardrobe considerably in the last year. I finally let go of things I clearly did not wear and now have some favorite key pieces I love to mix and match with my favorite accessories and shoes.

What influences your style and who are your style icons?
I’m drawn to natural things. I grew up rural Minnesota, we were influenced little by media, and style was something we found from within. I also come from a fashionable line of women- my mother and grandmothers have a very Town & Country appeal and have influenced my personal taste- it’d be rare for me not to be wearing something I was passed down. My influences have created a mix of boho nomad with chic, classic, I love it.

What do you think of Converse?
The converse chuck taylors are classic. I’ve owned a few pairs, but I’m very partial to my denim blue high-tops. Being 5′9, I usually wear flats and I love that I can mix converse in and out of my wardrobes as easily as my moccasins or sandals.

What would you do if you ran Converse for a day?
I’d pull a Tom’s Shoes and for every converse purchased, a pair would go someone who needs them, esp. people in Chile or Haiti.

tara, Ink.

In prep for an upcoming LA Vintage Exchange shoot- I met w my cute friend Lia at her work: Tara, Ink.- to check out the lines, talk about pulls, and eat a delicious lunch at Real Food Daily.

Tara, Ink. has unique.cool set up in West Hollywood- the showroom is located in a beautiful, well-designed Spanish style house and the offices in a bright back house with only a lush, green yard in between.
The fashion PR company represents a ton of cool lines, mixing fashion-forward indie designers with well-known brands like Trina Turk and Penguin. I immediately honed in on a line from a duo of friends called GAS’D, guess Taylor swift was just spotted in a T, we have so much in common! Their necklaces are super special and recreated from vintage materials. I must have been on a jewelry kick, because I also went a bit nuts over the Valou Jewelry 3 cap ring- i love.

A few snapshots from the afternoon…

Welcome to Tara, Ink.

heads Or tails

the City

My trip to NYC was great fun, but has resulted in a head cold I can’t shake. I’m popping Emergen-C like it’s life support.

Each day I had a list of stores to visit, each night I caught up with friends and ate amazing New York food. Most of my shopping time was spent in Greenwich Village, the Lower East Side, Nolita & Soho, which I covered all on foot. My thigh-high vintage nine west boots did a great job, but if I moved to the city my footwear would have to be completely upgraded.
Rag & Bone wool Coat, VTG New Hero cut-out Top, Jeggings!, and VTG Nine West leather Boots

Stops on my lists included:
The selection of vintage wares at Resurrection was tempting, but Frock was out of control with numerous YSL silk pieces in mint condition and a knit Chloe dress that could make you melt.

I also shopped my friend Danielle’s closest at her fabulous pre-WWII apartment, I ended up with a some new favorite designer pieces including adorable In God We Trust high-waist shorts and a pale pink Mayle slip dress.

Our final night in the City we had a room booked at the Thompson Hotel LES. The front desk guy totally hooked up the corner space which had wrap around windows and balconies- only one per floor. After a large, late dinner we forced ourselves to check out the club Above Allen on the 7th floor. It was a cool vibe- but one drink later we were ready to head for the room.

On the flight back I had sweet dreams of vintage couture.

I stumbled across the online boutique:

in New york

I’m visiting the big apple for a few days…
And I’ve put together a laundry list of vintage stores to visit, but have limited time so I’m starting from the top.
After looking at my route I’m questioning my shoe selection, next time maybe I pack before the two glasses of red wine.

For now, a healthy dose of NYC themed music videos:
Where dreams are made of- like finding vintage Chanel!

Sara Lov + New York is pretty.

Almost as good as spending the day in NYC w Ryan Adams.

drenched In a trench

LA is wet.
The best thing about the non-stop rain is the unlimited opportunities to wear my new/used London Fog Trench Coat and recently purchased MARC by Marc Jacobs Rain Boots. For extra prep points, I’ve been adding a tartan plaid umbrella. The coat has been a hit, I guess the color and length make a bold statement. And admittedly it is a proud moment when you pull off both stylish and functional in midst of a downpour.

Rain or not, the trench is a classic and if you don’t have one, you should consider. I love the vintage London Fog trench I picked up while thrifting or if you feel like a splurge, Burberry Prorsum’s gives you plenty to drool over in their Spring 2010 collection…

opening Ceremony

Recently I received a tank and a dress from the Alexander Wang T line as a gift.

The pieces were soft, comfy and completely me- but they also included a gift receipt to Opening Ceremony- offering options! With a drawer full of grey and black cotton basics, I couldn’t resist checking out the post-holiday sale at the store on La Cienga.

I decided to squeeze in the return right before my Friday happy hour date with friends at STK up the street. Giving myself a tight deadline did not do much and 10 minutes in I was lost among the numerous rooms. Well worth my time, I ended up with two new favorite tops!

An exclusive Chloë Sevigny For Opening Ceremony Scarf Pullover made with a super cool double-dyed seersucker material.

And, a Thin Jersey Tee by the Swedish brand Fifth Ave Shoe Repair- purchased in black.

Now on my Opening Ceremony Wish List:

The feeling I get when walking into Resurrection on Melrose is similar to what a kid may feel walking into a candy store, a very expensive candy store. It looks so good and I want it all! The NYC & LA based shops offer a unique selection of designer vintage items that I pray to discover each time I’m on the hunt. They recently launched an online store, making this situation even more tempting…

Chanel Silk Striped Day Dress
Gucci Vintage Wine Goblet
Zandra Rhodes Yellow Felt Caftan

2009 Music mix

Each year my holiday greeting to friends is a mix of favorite music tracks released in the last 365 days. In ‘09 I’ve been listening a lot to Bat for Lashes, Passion Pit and Neko Case- but believe The xx are No.1 on my list thus far.

Courtney celebrates’ 2009

Exploring the beaches of Maui, relaxing in the Catskill Mts,
hitting the vintage jackpot in Vegas, lounging poolside in Palm Springs and still making it back home to MN three times to breath some fresh air- I finally got out of LA in ’09!

Beyond travel- 2009 has been one intense year- from love, to death, to the day to day motions. Hardship brings knowledge, which brings understanding- our biggest contribution to society is compassion and I hope to use a lot more of it in 2010.

Horchata – Vampire Weekend
It Don’t Move Me – Peter Bjorn and John
No Intention – Dirty Projectors

rose Bowl

Sunday AM I woke up extra early to shop
the Pasadena Rose Bowl Flea Market.

The once a month sale is very popular, especially during the holiday months. This week the early morning showers made it an easy entrance.

The wet grounds got my
well worn leather riding boots wet.

So I was in search of the perfect thing
to solve the wet feet problem,
rain boots.

On the way I ran into a
3 story dream house for $65- sold!

Once I landed the dream house,
things started to look good!

These THIGH high motorcycle boots
from The Goods caught my eye.

Also, thought these camel
stacked heel boots were pretty cute.

My day at the Rose Bowl ended a success, including scoring an acid wash Levi’s jean jacket + high-waist leather pants, but boot-wise I did not find what I was hoping for…

So I headed to the Marc Jacobs store on Melrose where finally after wanting for so long, I purchased the MARC Rain Boots with the yellow bottoms. So comfy, at $30 w tax, I don’t know why I waited so long to get a pair!
